The Fascination of Soccer, Team, Motivation

Erich Rutemöller
Chief Instructor of the German Soccer Association (DFB), Member of the DFB Competence Team
Persistence in pursuing your goals is the basis of success
Erich Rutemöller is one of the best-known German soccer coaches.
In the German Soccer League (“Bundesliga”) he has coached the 1st FC Köln and Hansa Rostock, as well as SC Bonn. Rutemöller has played for Borussia Rheine 08, SSV Köttingen, the 1st FC Köln amateurs and Florida International University (Miami). Since 1994 he has also worked for the German Soccer Association (DFB).
On May 7, 1991, Rutemöller achieved a certain notoriety by telling one of his players at 1st FC Köln, Frank Ordenewitz, to deliberately get a red card. The scene was the semi-final of the DFB Cup between the 1st FC Köln and MSV Duisburg. During the match, Ordenewitz received his second yellow card of the competition, which meant he would have to miss the cup final. However, according to the DFB rules at that time, if he was to be sent off during this game, it would cancel the two yellow cards and he would be able to play in the final. After Rutemöller revealed to the press that the red card had been deliberately provoked, Ordenewitz was barred from playing in the final anyway. Cologne then went on to lose the final to Werder Bremen in a penalty shoot-out.
On July 1st 2000 Erich Rutemöller took over from Gero Bisanz as head coach in the training programme for people working towards their DFB soccer coach licence. Since April 2003 he has coached Team 2006, which was founded in January 2002 as a “team with perspective” to support the first national team.
